iPhone 5 vs iPhone 4s Unlocked: Worth the Money?

As iPhone deals go, one of the more complex, even dubious offers, often shrouded in marketing gobbledygook is the unlocked iPhone 5 conundrum. It goes like this: Remember the iPhone 5 that used to cost you $200 with a two-year contract? Now it’s available as a factory unlocked iPhone 5 for hundreds of dollars more:

(Note: in some cases, you can buy unlocked iPhone at cheaper prices online at various resellers.) iPhone 4S: If you love Siri and have to have her, she’s still the star of the show in the iPhone 4S, as low as $500. The iPhone 4 as low as $400 unlocked, a little cheaper than the iPhone 4S and iPhone 5. It’s also two generations old, but it’s still in high demand. For purposes of comparison the Samsung Galaxy S III is often a bit cheaper than iPhone 5.

While not sounding like one of the best iPhone deals out there, the unlocked iPhone option may invoke some iPhone 5 purchase reluctance, however, it can also provide some distinct benefits. For instance, a factory unlocked iPhone can be used on any carrier in the world, so you won’t have to worry while going out of the country. This can be a terrific opportunity more generally for those who want an iPhone without getting into a contract with any carrier.  But while all of this is sounds good, would you pay $849 for a factory iPhone 5 unlocked? There are one or two other options you may want to check out.

But if you’re still not convinced to buy the factory unlocked iphone, you still have the option to unlock your iPhone 5. On the other hand, newcomer iPhone providers  offer some seriously tempting alternatives, such as iPhone 5 for $100 upfront and then $20/month for two years — or $580 total, which is actually cheaper than the $650 price for an unlocked phone. At at T-Mobile for instance, the iPhone 4S costs $550, which is the same as an unlocked version, while the iPhone 4 is discounted down to $375 compared with $450 for an unlocked model.iPhone 5 unlocked

Though such new plans might be cheaper than those of its big carrier rivals, the answers to important questions concerning unsubsidized handset prices (locked or unlocked), and whether or not one can save cash by bringing in their own phone, differ by handset. Generally, however,  iPhone 5 prices at alternative carriers such as T-Mobile will tend to be a bargain, though other of their  prices generally follow the MSRP line.

Be aware that when choosing your iPhone plan, iPhones are locked to the carrier’s network, and T-Mobile will only unlock your handset when you pay off  the contract in full or if you’re a well-paying, long-standing (more than 60 days) customer. Also, be aware that phones that T-Mobile phones are optimized for its network, both LTE and other. Though most unlocked and quadband GSM phones are compatible with T-Mobile’s voice network, not all handsets will be able to use the carrier’s 3G and 4G connectivty. An AT&T version of iPhone 5 unlocked will be most compatible, but you should verify phones before buying. Often, the  Amazon price can be the lowest listed price for a new device.
